The Days of Decimal Machines

Posted on 2025年8月10日

huum,, not much sources that accurately convey the true nature of the defunct decimal machine and how it works are available now. While fragmentary information are recorded from various parties involved, there’s no comprehensive perspective. So the meaning isn’t conveyed. There were computers that used logic to perform variable-length decimal calculations, such as ‘1’ + ’12’ = ’13’, and I used one myself! And there was a time when information processing in the world was carried out on these machines. I still remember fragments of the bootstrap procedure, which continued: ,008015,022029. 1 means read a card, 2 means print a line. …
This needs to be preserved. So, this should be a priority. Before I can no longer write it.
